Australia is facing a nationwide shortage of veterinarians and veterinary nurses, which is why more clinics are looking at overseas sponsorship as a practical way to fill critical roles. For employers, the process starts with understanding two things: qualification recognition and visa eligibility criteria.
What do clinics need to check before starting sponsorship
Before moving ahead with sponsorship, clinics should confirm whether the candidate’s qualifications are recognised in Australia and whether they meet the requirements for the relevant visa pathway. Getting this right early can save significant time and avoid unnecessary delays.
For veterinarians
If the candidate’s qualification is recognised by the AVBC, they may be able to move forward without further examination, subject to registration and other standard requirements. If the qualification is not recognised, they will need to complete the AVBC assessment pathway before sponsorship and registration can proceed.
For veterinary nurses
For veterinary nurses, requirements can vary depending on the role, the candidate’s qualifications, and the state in which they will work. In Western Australia, registration is required and a Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing is mandatory.
482 vs 186 visa
The most common temporary pathway is the Subclass 482, which can allow eligible candidates to work in Australia for up to four years. It can also provide a pathway to permanent residency in the right circumstances.
For longer-term hires, the Subclass 186 is the permanent residency pathway for eligible employees. This is often considered where the clinic is looking to retain the candidate on a long-term basis.
Why this matters
For clinics considering overseas talent, the key is not just finding the right person. It is making sure their qualifications, registration, and visa pathway all align from the get-go.
